In rear - awkward start and lost many lengths - soon detached - some headway home straight - no impression (inquiry held into running and riding of gelding which jumped awkwardly from stalls and lost several lengths before becoming detached through early and middle stages until staying on from an unpromising position leaving back straight to finish 9th of 11 runners - beaten 8 3/4l; vet examined gelding post-race and had nothing to report; jockey stated that his instructions were to bounce out and be prominent - which is a customary pattern of racing for gelding; however gelding was very slowly into stride and he initially allowed gelding time to balance up and find its stride; he explained that after approximately 1f he slapped gelding down neck with his whip and rode gelding along to improve his position and make ground on field but unfortunately his mount appeared sluggish and did not respond to his urgings; from this point jockey explained that he accepted his position despite being a long way behind main division of runners and allowed gelding an opportunity to fill the bridle as early pace was quick; he added that gelding eventually tacked on to backmarkers and made ground over final 3f to finish his race off well; he indicated this was only his third career ride - whilst also acknowledging that potentially having too shorter hold of gelding's head in stalls had contributed to gelding not jumping into stride quicker and thereafter he should have persevered with his efforts for longer to ensure that his mount remained more competitive in first half of race; trainer confirmed instructions and stated he was obviously disappointed with ride that gelding had received but felt this was largely down to rider inexperience after start of race had not gone as planned; he did also explain that gelding had previously raced in a disinterested fashion earlier in year for a senior rider at Wolverhampton.)(op 25/1 tchd 22/1)
